Glucosamine
-
Glucosamine is a natural dietary substance that the body uses to help keep cartilage smooth, moist and flexible.
- Glucosamine stimulates cells called chondrocytes, which help produce proteoglycans and GAGs. Proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans fill the cartilage's collagen matrix and attract binding water molecules that lubricate and nourish the cartilage.
- Studies have shown that glucosamine is the key factor in determining the amount of proteoglycans that chondrocytes churn out. By increasing the amount of glucosamine available you increase the amount of proteoglycans made. Cartilage needs lots of proteoglycans to stay healthy and well-lubricated.
- Clinical studies show Glucosamine helps with knee arthritis. Glucosamine contributes to the production of collagen and helps normalize cartilage metabolism. This can keep your knee cartilage from wearing out.
- Over 15 clinical studies have shown that Glucosamine reduce arthritis pain as well as anti-inflammatory drugs.
Devil's Claw Extract
- Studies have found that taking devil's claw for several months substantially reduces pain and improves physical functioning in people with osteoarthritis. In addition, Devil's Claw users experienced fewer side effects and required fewer pain-reducing medications. Another study found that devil's claw supplementation was effective in patients with rheumatic diseases (arthrosis and low back pain).
- Devils Claw has been widely studied and used by European doctors for over 25 years to relieve pain and inflammation (especially Arthritis and Back Pain).
- Devil's claw contains compounds known as iridoid glucosides, which influence inflammation mediators in the body (prostaglandins and eicosanoids such as thromboxanes and leucotrienes). Reducing the synthesis of the inflammatory compounds, reduces both pain and inflammation.
- The German Commission E has approved the use of Devil's Claw for "degenerative disorders" - such as arthritis, tendonitis and back pain.
- One study of back pain showed that 25 out of 30 subjects experienced significant reductions in pain levels and increases in mobility (by about 50%) when they took Devils Claw as directed.
- Devils Claw extract is considered a natural Cox 2 inhibitor. Cox 2 is the enzyme responsible for pain. Many consider Devils Claw to work as well as Cox-2 inhibiting drugs without the side effects.
Boron
- Boron inhibits the COX and LOX enzymes. These are the enzymes responsible for creating pain and inflammation in your body. (Remember COX inhibiting drugs like Vioxx?) Boron can inhibit COX naturally without the side effects associated with prescription drugs.
- Boron deficiency has been linked to arthritis. Double-blind research has found that 6 mg of boron per day, taken for two months, may relieve symptoms of osteoarthritis.
- Anecdotal reports, combined with some epidemiological findings, suggest that supplemental boron may alleviate the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
- In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study in which half of the subjects were given 6 mg of boron daily while the other half received the placebo. The subjects were evaluated three times prior to taking the tablets, after three weeks on the tablets and after eight weeks on the tablets. Patients were graded with respect to their symptoms as well as their use of a permitted analgesic. At the end of the eight-week period, 50% of those taking boron showed improvement.
- Studies show boron can shrink existing prostate tumors and decrease PSA. In a study published in the Proceedings of the American Association of Cancer Research, scientists watched tumors shrink by 25%-38% with boron and PSA drop between 86.4% and 88.6%.
